Specify the webbing
Begin with the fibre composition, width, thickness and finish. Nylon and polyester webbing can vary substantially between suppliers, even when product photographs look similar. Ask for the composition of printed surfaces, backing, padding and labels as well as the main strap. Keep a physical sample of the colour and texture you approve.
Compare complete constructions
A collar specification includes the buckle, adjuster, attachment ring, stitching and strap ends. Request material details for the hardware and close-up photographs of the assembly. When reviewing samples, check adjustment, buckle operation, exposed edges and the consistency of the stitching. Agree on the relevant performance checks for the intended size range before placing the order.
Build a clear size range
Use a measurement drawing to define strap width and the adjustable neck range. State whether dimensions describe the product or the animal it is intended to fit. Avoid comparing products by S, M and L alone. For matching leads and harnesses, review the colours together under the same light rather than relying on separate catalogue images.
Quote the same specification
Send each supplier the same size breakdown, colour references, hardware requirement, logo method and packing instructions. Ask how changing colours or sizes affects the order quantity. Separate sample and artwork charges from the unit price, and request packed quantities and carton dimensions. A lower unit price is only useful when the materials, construction and packing remain comparable. Record the final sample reference so repeat orders can be checked against the same product.
