Planning private-label packaging

Match the retail pack to the product, sales channel and shipping volume.

Start with the sales channel

A hanging retail display, shelf presentation and online order each need different packing. Begin with how the buyer will receive and display the product. Hangtags and sleeves suit some textile accessories; boxes may help present a set or protect its shape. Choose a format that holds the product securely and leaves the information easy to read.

Separate the artwork from the structure

First agree on pack dimensions, material, closure and how the product sits inside. Then prepare the print file using the supplier's confirmed template. Include the product name, size, colour reference, barcode location and any market-specific text supplied for the order. Check the barcode on the printed sample and confirm which parts of the pack remain visible on display.

Understand the order quantities

Ask for separate quantities and costs for the product and printed packaging. Different sizes, colours or languages may need separate artwork and print runs. Where several items share a pack format, compare a common printed base with item-specific labels. Confirm how unused packaging will be counted, stored and handled when the next order is placed.

Review the packed shipment

Approve a sample with the actual product inside, then confirm units per inner pack and outer carton. Compare carton dimensions and gross weight before choosing the final format. For bedding and other compressible products, agree on the packing method and review the unpacked sample. Keep photographs, artwork versions and packing instructions together so the production order and later replenishment use the same approved arrangement.
